About

Welcome to the Writing/Romance blog.   We’re here to talk about writing and chew gum.  Possibly sip some Diet Coke. Definitely ingest some form of chocolate.  You know what?  Forget the gum.

These pages are intended as a dry run for that writing book I keep promising to write. The idea is that each of these pages would be the first page of a section of essays and exercises on that topic.  Should only take me about a thousand years.  In the meantime, you get units with general writing instruction ending with topics specifically on writing romance.  (If you haven’t noticed, most stories in all genres have a romance in them somewhere.  Very popular subplot.  Very difficult to write.)

There are general content pages that list all the posts on that topic, if you’re focusing on one aspect.  Like Conflict.  Or Structure.  (More to come.)  Or you can start at the beginning and just scroll through.  Whatever works for you.

The important thing to remember here is that the information in the posts is intended as possible approaches to story, not as absolute laws which must be followed, which is why all posts on this site should be read with this disclaimer in mind:

I don’t want anybody getting that deer-in-headlights look, thinking “Oh, my god, I DON’T DO THIS!”  Chill, lots of people don’t do this.  If it helps, great.  If it doesn’t, turn the page.

And good luck with that story!

I might not have found the right place to tell you this, but I just finished Maybe This Time. I loved it, just as I have enjoyed all your other works. Thank you! And if a ghost book wasn’t enough, I was totally surprised when this line appeared. “And here’s a oldie , going out from Joe to Brenda…”. As you can guess, I’m Brenda and my husband is Joe. It was totally fun to see that! Keep writing, I would miss you if you stopped. Thanks, Brenda
